NSP Atomic Flyer PU
The Atomic Flyer has a history and you can clearly see it in its shape. The board is designed to be ridden by surfers of all levels and the multi-fin configuration allows individuals to set up the fins to meet their preferences in small to medium-sized waves.
For more interesting shortboard shapes, check out our shortboard overview here or scroll to the bottom of this page.
Built with a traditional custom-shaped polyurethane (PU) core combined with a wood stringer, the core’s density contributes to more mass, letting the Atomic Flyer sit a little lower in the water. High-performance riders appreciate this feel as it allows you to keep your rail under and gives that slicy or “knifey” ride.
Being a touch heavier also helps PU boards to handle choppy conditions better and are less prone to being bounced around.

NSP Atomic Flyer PU Design
- A unique feature is the retro “beak” style nose profile, which is a result of maintaining some thickness and volume in the forward profile of the board. The purpose of this is to add stability to the board in small and less powerful waves. This increased volume delivers and helps maintain forward momentum and forward trim sensitivity.
- The essence of the outline is defined by the double wings, which deliver a very purposeful function to this design.
- The objective of these “flyers” is to increase the displacement and “trim” area throughout the board.
- This increase in the board’s displacement increases the volume underfoot while maintaining a refinement in the tail outline. The result is an increased low-speed dynamic.
- Other interesting features such as the flat deck, deliver a very unique and positive response feel underfoot. In addition, the distinctive bevelled rail concept not only adds to the retro look but also increases volume throughout the board to be maintained without impacting and bulking up the rail and dulling the board’s response and reactivity.
- A highly versatile board that is stable and an easy rider for all comers! It also packs plenty of dynamic performance for those with the skill to extract it.
- The Atomic Flyer is the last design by the late Kym Thompson.
NSP Atomic Flyer PU fins
The Atomic Flyer comes with a 5-fin cluster on the tail section that is Futures compatible. A soft diamond tail shape creates a ride similar to a swallow tail, without the ding sensitivity you would get from sharp angles on a conventional PU design.
NSP Atomic Flyer PU Construction
Precision-CNC cut, shaped, laminated and finished by hand. With a natural flex pattern and reliable feel, PU has been the standard construction for many years in the surfing industry.
While not as durable or as light as boards laminated with epoxy resin, PU performs in all surf conditions and can be adapted to suit a wide variety of surfboard models.
- CNC-profiled, hand-shaped high-density polyurethane foam with a wooden stringer
- High-quality polyester resin and fiberglass hand laminated and sanded to a satin-rub or fully polished high-quality finish
- NSP designed FTU fin boxes (compatible with Futures Fins) on all models
