Pictured above, Miki Dora, another surfing legend, shares a moment with Donald Takayama back in 2001, somewhere in Noosa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><g class=\"gr_ gr_1147 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"1147\" data-gr-id=\"1147\">Originally<\/g> hailing from Hawaii, Donald started shaping young and surfing even younger. Spending most of his free time on the beach surfing, it didn&#8217;t take long before someone from the mainland took notice. Dale Velzy, an industry legend himself, but at the time a relatively unknown <g class=\"gr_ gr_7 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-del replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"7\" data-gr-id=\"7\">entrepreneur,<\/g> invited Donald or &#8220;DT&#8221; over to California to shape for him. This move to California kicked off a life lived for surfing, and today, an original Donald Takayama is a highly <g class=\"gr_ gr_8 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling multiReplace\" id=\"8\" data-gr-id=\"8\">collectible<\/g>&nbsp;piece of surfboard history, changing hands for thousands of dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Donald Takayama Tribute at The SHAAC - HD\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I2ik61RdfTA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Responsible for several iconic shapes, Takayama designs have been licensed to Surftech for more than 20 years.  Long before Donald sadly passed away, he trusted Surftech (an established surfboard manufacturer from the States) to manufacture only the original shapes.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><strong>Editor:<br><\/strong>The Surftech Takayama surfboards do benefit from upgraded constructions in key areas, with carbon composite reinforcements, updated fin boxes, GreenPoxy for Ecoboard construction or graphics where necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TAKAYAMA SCORPION II TUFLITE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Scorpion II is one of those boards. Essentially a modified version of the Scorpion, the Scorpion II has a wider tail and narrower nose with a more &#8220;rounded out&#8221; template. There&#8217;s paddling speed, early wave entry and riding doesn&#8217;t require you to put your back foot over the fins &#8211; trimming the board from the middle works as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accomplished surfers who feel their fitness deteriorating appreciate the performance features of the Egg, it&#8217;s early wave entry and down the line speed.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Competent older surfers <g class=\"gr_ gr_3 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar multiReplace\" id=\"3\" data-gr-id=\"3\">who&#8217;s<\/g> fitness isn&#8217;t what it was will love The Egg&#8217;s performance and the early wave entry which allows them to compete with ever busier, younger and fitter line-ups. Several key characteristics make the \u201c<em>In the Pink<\/em>\u201d (ITP) a purebred nose rider, and the name itself is a nose riding reference too. \u201c<em>In the pink<\/em>\u201d means standing on the marked section of the nose (which is often pink), qualifying your ride as a nose ride. Equally, experienced nose riders will take their skill level to the next echelon as the Takayama \u201cIn the Pink\u201d is just such a good platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Square tail<\/strong><br>Ride it single fin for more drawn out turns, or go for sidebites with a slightly smaller center fin to access its maneuverability and enjoy a more &#8220;loose&#8221; feeling. You&#8217;re still a longboarder, but with the DT2, you&#8217;re going to doodle some lines and make some turns: When the surf gets more power, a rounded pintail will allow you to sink your back foot with a little more enthusiasm, allowing you to roll off the tail. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Noseriding<\/strong><br>With a more drawn-in nose, you can still noseride a DT-2 but it won&#8217;t be as forgiving as the &#8220;In the Pink&#8221;.
